May Music, Day 23 – ********

I’ve seen more kids’ programmes than most.

With 7 seven kids, ranging in age from 25 to 7 and thirty years teaching under my belt, I’ve been to more pantos than I care to count and listened to every inane parody of pop songs the casts can come up with.

I’ve row, row’d my boat up and down so many streams my collection of lifebelts is legend.

‘The Singing Kettle’ burnt out my whistle till there was only a hiss left and a drizzle of enthusiasm at my base.

Barney, the big purple pestilence, has cavorted countless times on our TV, me simulating exhausted enjoyment equalling my kids’ earnest efforts while belting out, ‘I love you, You love me’, till the only thing I loved any more was the sound of silence.

I’ve been Ursula to my daughters’ ‘Little Mermaid’ scenarios and pretty much embraced every character designed to drive any parent to battyhood.

We still have numerous videos collected over the years and there is still one wee lass who likes to watch them.

I refuse to inflict any of those on myself, or anyone else, for this 23rd day of Twindaddy’s 25 day music challenge.

So, instead, why not have a listen to the Count from Sesame Street. Censored. He kinda looks and acts in this the way I feel when kids’ programmes and songs all get too much. I like to count the way he does. Sometimes I even count like this when I hear rap music or anything that sounds like, ‘in da house’.

  1. The description of watching Barney is so relatable! I think you describe the experience exactly! I have to admit, I had not seen this version of the Count’s song before, but it sure did make me laugh.

    1. My 18 year old son loved Barney from the first moment he clapped eyes on him. It was charming…initially! I now have a love/hate relationship with most of these programmes and songs. Someone on WP put me onto the Count clip after I was having a rant about censorship. I like it too. 🙂 x

      1. Of course! This would never happen with my laptop. My laptop baby is in the next room and I’d have to get out of bed, have to boot it up, wait for ages, go make more coffee, then I’d see the dishes in the sink, start doing chores, get pissed off, shout at the weans for being messy buggers, they’d want lunch. It’s complicated…..so the kindle gets it!

  2. Sitting in hairdressers, can’t play Da Count, I shall peek later. Ps get those videos transposed onto DVD’s before it’s too late. We did… The colour on some already fadly to a ghastly yellow and green, but most are ok. x

      1. I hate trying to do any blogging or commenting when mobile. Between spellchecker and predictive texting, I constantly screw up. I thought I-pads would be easier. Not getting one of those. 😦 Wonder if my laptop would fit in my handbag! 🙂 x

    1. I haven’t even done that with our wedding vid. Jeez, we’ll be jaundiced in it. I don’t think I’d bother with the kids’ ones. When the lifeblood runs out of them I might very well be cheering. Just as well you’re not listening to the Count in the hairdressers. 🙂 x

      1. Lol my wedding ‘vid’ is on 8mm, to top it off in ‘those days’ the guy we had film it, did the audio on a tape, so we lost that somewhere, so I have a huge reel, of everyone being marcel Marceau! Still haven’t watched but I will! x

      2. Oh I wish I could sign something back here! My wedding vid was done by a friend of my younger brother’s – amateur. I wanted a warts and all footage. It’s hilarious in places. Notably, said younger brother getting hold of the camera and filming um…footage… of the love of his life at the time, starting at her shoes…with commentary. What you gonna do? He was 18 at the time. Shit, I’d better get it converted. Wouldn’t want to lose any of that to colour or voice loss. Plus it’s the last living testament to my dad and Frank’s mum. They both died within the year. Bang! From humour to depression in one fell swoop. Not depression, actually. But, shit, the sadness never really goes, does it? Rhetorical question. I know the answer. Hope you had a lovely day at the hairdresser’s missus. I’m all booked in for tomorrow. Fade away the encroaching grey! Lifting my own spirits even while I meander. Dad would be all, ‘let it be’. Mum would be, ‘Why the roots? Are you skint? Here take some money and get a job done on those offensive strays.’!
Aw, shit, I’m stopping now….Big hugs, lady, and kisses. Go hug those penguins.x

      3. Lol loved your commentary, hugs with thoughts to those you have lost ❤ I can imagine the video, shoes ..OMG how cute would that be, worth a giggle. Yes get it done before it's lost to the colour distorter! Is that even a word? They aren't grey hun, they are sparkles. 😉 so my hairdresser tells me. Thanks babe, I shall give me a hug, enjoy your weekend. ❤ xx

    1. ‘I love you, you love me, sometimes I just love myself, with a great big hug and a candle…’ Not quite the same ring to it. But one wonders, right enough! 🙂 x

  3. 1. It gets lonely in the castle.

    2. He really should call Janice. Or Miss Piggy.

    3. When I see the drivel they pass off as kids’ programming today, it makes me nostalgic for Barney.

    1. I could do with some castle living…on occasion. But who’s Janice? Should I know her? It’ll be a cold day in that furnace place before I miss Barney. But, yeah, some of the kiddy progs leave a lot to be desired. Might be worth a blogger’s thought!

      1. I recognise her now once I’ve seen her but couldn’t have told you a name. Interesting post on Disney. I don’t know a lot of the characters you allude to but I do recognise the attitude that pervades a lot of children’s TV. Bring back Tom and Jerry.

      2. I’d much rather have anvils and butcher’s knives than the noise and attitude Disney kids bring. Disney parents are the worst. If parents were a race, we’d be deeply offended.

  4. I wanted to see the uncensored version of this song and couldn’t find it. It appears the bleeps are just put in places to make it sound dirty, but the original just says ‘count’. Messed up. I am so glad there were not any purple dumb dinosaurs when I was young, I would be more warped than I already am. I am a result of Looney Tunes and Scooby Doo, what could be worse! LOL

    1. Looney Tunes kid here too, Rene. The person that put me on to the Count video was showing me, as part of a comment, that censorship might hide the most innocent of words. Remember about Trey and the Community page? It was that thread. A whole lot of fuss over nothing offensive.x
