Lip Service

Mists linger on the corners of the city where he lived,

Rolling in and round and clinging on,

Legacy of fog where Wilde was wont to drift,

Swirling still though lighter in its form.

Name and shame, the fashion, presented on a plate

Indecency, too gross for social graces,

Law, though now repealed, belies the want of hate.

Clear the names, no blame upon their faces.

    1. Nice one, Cheryl-Lynn! Thanks for the link and the reblog. It’s awful to think there are still people whose names were scandalised. There’s little point in repealing the law without retrospective follow through on justice. How long before people are treated equally is a constant wonder to me.

      2. I know. And I haven’t even seen the movie yet. I remember watching one about Oscar Wilde and being so sad for him and how his life turned out. So much is done by any one of us behind closed doors and yet we are so quick to judge. Hopefully, times are changing in how we perceive what was once deemed sufficient to destroy so many lives.

    A beautiful highlighting the injustices an estimated 49,000 men who, like Alan Turing, were convicted of consenting same-sex relations under the British “gross indecency” law (only repealed in 2003), and also all the other men convicted under other UK anti-gay laws.
    A colleague was kind enough to refer me to the link to see a movie called “The Imitation Game” telling the story of Alan Turing Pardon all of the estimated 49,000 men who, like Alan Turing, were convicted of consenting same-sex relations under the British “gross indecency” law (only repealed in 2003), and also all the other men convicted under other UK anti-gay laws.
