Flash! Flash!

It’s mirrored in rotation

flash! flash! there!

we see it and we’re safe

and can veer from everywhere

there’s danger on the rocky

danger unto death

we turn around and flee the risk

doing what seems best

flash! flash! It’s there again

such a simple plan

repelling and attracting

warning when it can

I’m looking for that lighthouse

so that I can steer my course

I’ve seen it once or twice, sometimes

I sail there for discourse

the danger is attractive

when that little light blinks on

flash! flash! there it goes

bidding while it warns

a little blink from heaven

flash! flash! there!

I’m off again on sailing ship

bound for who knows where

till all the lights have settled into

twinkling steady tone

adventure on life’s roughest seas

until safely harbour’d home

Life Is Brave

Living on the edge, near rivers churning,

A quake away from heartbeat shocked to still,

In sight of Etnas, fleet of foot no saviour,

Threatened on all sides but stood, by will.

A bomb away from end in messy graveyard,

Bullets hailing fast as driving snow,

Yet we live, rejoice in what’s around us,

Still we love and risk as on we go,

Belittling fear, unworthy as oppressor,

Aged in ashes fallen all through time,

Better yet, we weather all, endeavour

Unity, resilient, we’ll be fine.

Disease away from death as on time marches,

Detritus around, we veer and wave,

Hope eternal, risen from the pyres,

Onwards, ever onwards, life is brave.

The Climb

Tremulous and wary,

Scarred outcrops, hands do meet,

Risking all for summit,

Chasms at my feet.

Wending way through mire,

Sunken souls abound,

Treading carefully, unknown

Pathways to be found.

Clambering to mountain top,

Paths trod by others past,

Obliterated passage,

Take care and hold on fast.

On hands and knees to grip the way,

Rising then to greet

Peak among the clouds on high,

Accomplishment so sweet.

Faster than ascent of this,

Descent knows clearer rite,

Sliding swiftly, gloriously,

Abandoned safety flight.

Ascent’s a scary business,

Risking life and limb

But touching heaven’s foothills

Makes for worthy aim.

I said I’d never tackle

Such a one again,

Elevated trial,

Encountering so much pain.

New challenges arise and then

I don my hiking gear,

Embark on death-defying quest,

Inside my heart I cheer

At opposition clearly met,

In honest self-endeavour,

Braver than ignoring them,

Is trying with some fervour.

Sometimes we may not see the crest,

Shrouded so in cloud,

But effort and endurance

May make ourselves feel proud.

Some hardy togs, a hiking staff

And heart of sterner stuff,

Battling on, in adversity,

Often is enough.
