A Real State

Every time I closed my eyes I saw people,

Strangers in my midst with tools in hand,

And every time I saw them I dismissed them,

They shrugged and left but returned when I turned round.

My husband couldn’t see them though I told him,

My children couldn’t see, they raised their brows,

I felt crazy with myself and with the whole crowd,

Who were these men and why were they here now.

I entered rooms and there they were dismantling

Everything they found and deemed demised,

I argued, shouted, waved my hands before them,

They shrugged again and, though gone, were still inside.

I hurried to the rooms that they were haunting,

Not spectres, no, but quite determined still

That all my protestations, all my anguish,

Could be ignored while on they went about their will.

My eyes were opened in their closed state, I knew this,

A dreamer’s state but wakened yet withal,

I’d wake for real, return and there they were still present,

A nightmare to a sleeper when sleep calls.

I had to write this down upon my waking,

Or did I write it while still in my dream

Or was the dream and all the fears and terrors

An illustration of my mind and world for real.

Australia

All those posts on fire. This one most of all.

At world’s end,

In beauteous land,

Natural element

Takes a stand,

Creating chaos

Where it dares,

Ribbons of fire,

Crimson flares.

Destruction wrought,

Promethean power

Smothers nature

Day and hour,

Fighting battle’s

Raging roar,

Anguished citizens’

Hearts full sore.

In thoughts and prayers

We offer you

Fellowship

And wishes true,

That all may cease

So peace to reign

In beauty’s bounty

Abide again.

Dragon’s Breath

4

In dragon’s burning breath

There rages fire,

Bent on earth destruction

It does not tire, of

Burning up all sources

Known for fuel.

Emptiness and barrenness,

Such fool,

To leave a path of chaos

In its wake,

Heaving earth,

Obliterate

And shake

Foundations

To their very core.

Consumptive greed,

Nought for evermore.

With thanks to Mark’s Gallery for these pictures he posted, depicting bush fires currently rampant in Australia. He kindly obliged with photos of Fire after I had joked that I was going to write poems working my way through all the elements, having done some on Air and Water. These pictures, although of actual events, elicited in me an entirely different sort of response. My apologies if some of them are depressing! But some of them are loving and sensual. So a good balance I would say, eh?

A Tinderbox

510Bush Fire

One flint to strike,

One spark to light

A tinderbox of fear.

Mistrust and greed,

All flames will feed,

Conflagration near.

A world where light

Cowers in fright,

Where wanton darkness dares,

Plays hidden games,

Devouring flames, while

We look askance and stare.

Dumbfounded tears

For wasted years,

Trust in awful liars.

They’ll burn the world

With power’s lust and

Destructive global fires.

Fire 1

Drift now

In hazy cloud of ash.

It’s ended

And all of life is past.

Buildings

Commemorate for all,

Existence once,

Before all mankind’s fall.

22 (1)

Sleep now,

All music

Long since

Gone.

Silence.

No singer

Left

For song.

Fire 8

Harken

To the silence.

Now

It speaks.

History

Repeated,

All hope

Leaks.

14

Hush now,

Heaven

Weeps

For wrong,

Carrying

All souls

Where

We belong.

21

Truth

Plundered,

Distorted,

All hope burned.

Mankind

Broken,

Nothing ever

Learned.
