Her Gift

I had the privilege, 26 years ago, almost to the minute, of giving birth to my first child. I had the privilege today to spend all day with her sharing a wonderful gift given by her fiance who, in his love for her, chose to share the gift with me. It was a special day, luxurious and relaxing. In her company it was a perfect day. Her presence, from that first 14th April has been a gift that keeps on giving. My daughter, Claire-Frances. An angel. With a wicked sense of humour. We had the best day. Almost as good as 26 years ago for me. And much less pain!

I did not know,

Could not have known,

This day repeated long ago

Would come like this,

Would see the cherub,

Woman grown.

Angelic then,

Still angel now,

That pure of heart, retained,

With humour’s spark

A flash of time,

And how

Embraces love,

My girl, this friend,

Is love embraced,

Surrounds her as a halo,

Delighted then, in giving gift,

Delighting without end.

The Thrill

Bird in the sky

It’s a wide sky to fly out on your own here,

Kinda lonesome in a lovely sort of languid, lithesome way,

Like distance is no object on a clear day

And wings are happy just to flap away.

It’s a long time I’ve travelled on this journey,

Kinda ages since I roosted for a rest,

Like someone’s moved the landmarks without warning

But I’m happy doing what I do the best.

It’s the flight, you see, that really is the main part,

Kinda shooting breeze and riding currents fair,

Like flying without falling is my skill set

And nothing in this world can quite compare.

It’s the way I am, you know, I’m off the wire,

Kinda restless when I have to stay too still,

Like motion is my purpose and my meaning,

It’s a gift of wings and head for heights that thrill.

Inferno

13

All fantasy, reality, fused in one,

Love revealed, to inferno does succumb,

A moment’s revelation and desire,

Devoured by flame of passion’s burning fire.

Gratified

At heaven’s secret gift,

Enlightenment

To cause all hearts to lift

Eyes unto the stars

So late at night

Revealing source of ecstasy,

Torture and delight.

All hope remains while

Breath is on this earth,

Razed in love,

Awaiting soul’s rebirth

Such fire rages

Consumes all very reason,

Blinds the eyes,

Temptation touches treason.

With thanks to Mark’s Gallery for these pictures he posted, depicting bush fires currently rampant in Australia. He kindly obliged with photos of Fire after I had joked that I was going to write poems working my way through all the elements, having done some on Air and Water. These pictures, although of actual events, elicited in me an entirely different sort of response. My apologies if some of them are depressing! But some of them are loving and sensual. So a good balance I would say, eh?
